NBI and our partners have released a new, interactive dashboard to help museums better understand how space conditioning intersects with energy usage, emissions, and safeguarding collections. Part of the broader Min/Max project, this new tool approximates changes in energy use and costs associated with adopting broadened temperature and relative humidity parameters in museum facilities.
The dashboard demonstrates that broadening the temperature and humidity setpoints in museums beyond the strict, and commonly pursued, 70°F / 50% relative humidity regime can meaningfully reduce energy use and emissions without compromising standards of care. Preliminary results indicate that broadened parameters could unlock energy savings up to 25% for similar museums nationwide.

In 2027, NBI and partners will publish additional guidance on the management of museum HVAC systems to reduce energy usage, save money, and support sustainability goals. The Min/Max project is led by Environment and Culture Partners, in partnership with NBI and with support from A2 Efficiency.
