Julia Hustwit

Director of Codes and Policy

Julia Hustwit serves as NBI’s Director of Codes and Policy.  She leads our team of national experts in our mission to transform the way we shape our world – and the way our world shapes us – by helping governments, utilities, and real estate owners implement standards, goals, and incentives that are designed to meet 21st Century challenges.  Julia has devoted her 20-year career to improving the sustainability, resilience, healthfulness, and equity of our built environment, with a special focus on the needs of vulnerable communities.  She has served as a senior policy advisor, program manager, and government change-maker under three US Presidents, and she spearheaded innovative efforts to decarbonize, protect, preserve, and improve the nation’s affordable housing stock during her decade at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and US Department of Energy.  Julia is a licensed architect and holds degrees in architecture, environmental policy, and international development from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.
