Mariel is the senior technical writer at New Buildings Institute. She brings extensive experience in the buildings and energy sectors. She previously served as the lead research editor at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), where she oversaw the writing and editing of more than 25 energy-focused publications each year. Her expertise includes project scoping and development, audience targeting, research strategy, and refining content. Mariel is highly regarded for her ability to collaborate with subject matter experts to produce publications that are clear, accurate, and strategically aligned.
Mariel earned her doctorate in history of science from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Columbia University. Her dissertation analyzed the push for energy-efficient housing in 1970s America during the energy crisis and resulting concerns about indoor air quality and public health.
Originally from San Francisco, she has lived in several places, including the Seattle and Portland areas and Vermont, where she enjoyed using heat pumps in a cold climate. Mariel now resides in the greater Boston area and enjoys distance running, swimming, spending time in nature (especially by the ocean), reading real books printed on paper, and savoring good coffee.
