Eric Makela Joins NBI’s Codes and Policy Team

We are pleased to announce the addition of Eric Makela to our Codes and Policy team. He brings over 30 years of global expertise in energy code development, training and evaluation, throughout the United States as well as abroad, including Abu Dhabi, Fiji, and Bahrain. Prior to joining us at NBI, Eric was the lead for the Codes and Standards team at Cadmus Group, where he managed energy, code development and implementation, as well as program evaluation. As a Senior Research Scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Lab, Eric had many accomplishments including a collaboration with NBI and AIA to win a 25+% increase in the 2012 Commercial IECC.

Eric has already worked with many NBI partners throughout his career. He has served many terms on the International Code Council Commercial Committee, he has supported municipal building departments, state energy offices, utilities, material manufacturers, and regional energy-efficiency organizations. He has also provided training and education on advanced building practices to architects and engineers through the NEEA Better Bricks and many other programs, and done significant work in the Southwest states. Eric will continue his lead of the Northwest Energy Codes Group in developing code change proposals to the International Energy Conservation Code on behalf of NEEA. He also will support NBI’s broader engagement in code development, with a new emphasis on stretch codes and multifamily code adoption.

The addition of Eric to NBI’s team strengthens our ability to work with organizations and leading jurisdictions across the country, and beyond. Eric’s technical expertise will be a critical component for helping jurisdictions of all types meet energy goals and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
