ZNE for Schools Workshop
In conjunction with the Green Technology California Green Schools Conference, NBI and the CPUC hosted a preconference workshop on November 4 on Zero Energy Buildings for Schools. The Schools workshop was attended by more than 100 participants from K-12 schools, higher education, manufacturing, design and building industry, utilities and state agencies. Speakers included Dian Grueneich and Dan Buch discussing CPUC goals and Prop 39 pilots, with presentations by Peter Turnbull from PG&E on Sacred Heart Elementary School, John Diffenderfer of Aedis architects on the Campbell School District’s 8 ZNE schools, Marika Erdely from EconoMe on financing and energy analysis, Bill Orr from the Coalition for High Performance Schools, and Heather Flint Chatto and Ralph DiNola from NBI on the Status of ZNE, new ZNE Communication Toolkit and process for developing ZNE plans and policies. ZNE for Local Governments Workshop & ZNE Building Tour
Held at the Energy Innovation Center in San Diego on November 3, more than 50 participants from local government, utilities, design, and energy organizations convened to learn about a new Roadmap for Local Governments to achieve zero energy buildings, hear about case studies of ZNE and ultra-low energy buildings, and gain new tools and resources for developing ZNE plans and policies. Following the workshop, many participants traveled to the J.K. Venter Institute at the University of San Diego for a tour. The lab was designed by ZGF Architects to achieve zero net energy and is anticipated to be the first zero energy lab in the world.
