The Chicago Chapter of the USGBC publishes a measured performance study of 25 Illinois LEED projects
Due to our continued work in the field of measured performance, NBI is encouraged to see other organizations conducting significant research in this realm. Contributing perspectives such as this one, not only broadens the conversation, but also serves to reinforce the importance of this work.
This report incorporates in one study several aspects not combined in previously published work, including where possible:
- Quantitative green house gas emissions and water use metrics, in addition to energy use.
- Qualitative health and productivity information
- Transportation metrics from employee commuting practices
- Construction and operating costs
Several of the major energy performance findings were consistent with previous reports, including NBI’s 2007 national study :
- EUIs were lowest in the buildings that attained the maximum energy optimization points.
- Individual results were widely varied.
- For a variety of previously documented reasons, design models were not a good predictor of post-occupancy measured EUI.
- Better benchmarking methods and datasets are needed to properly interpret whole building EUIs and normalize for differences in occupant activities, required loads and schedules.
As an organization that has worked, and continuous to work with NBI, the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) was the lead researcher for the data collection and analysis portion of the report. This final report was the first year result of the "Regional Green Building Case Study Project", a collaborative, multi-year research study.
