New Buildings Institute: A Top 100 Nonprofit to Work for in Oregon

nbiinfographics2New Buildings Institute is proud that we have been named one of the top 100 nonprofits to work for in Oregon by Oregon Business magazine. We were ranked #25 under “Small Organizations: Fewer than 20 Oregon employees.”  There is a lot of competition to make this list with more than 5,000 employees and volunteers taking part in the survey and nonprofits employing more than 140,000 people statewide.

The 100 Best Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon rating is the signature project of the Oregon Business, an award-winning magazine founded in 1981. The annual survey, now in its eighth year, asks nonprofit-sector employees to rate their satisfaction with workplace practices. The 100 Best list showcases organizations that are exceptional places to work based on employee feedback to the survey.

This feedback is extremely valuable to us as we seek to keep and attract leading thinkers at every level of our organization so that we can improve the energy performance of commercial buildings and define the future of the built environment. Our team works collaboratively with commercial building market players—governments, utilities, energy efficiency advocates and building professionals—to remove barriers to energy efficiency, including promoting advanced design practices, technologies, public policies and programs that improve building energy performance. Given the transformations happening in today’s energy industry and the high impact of the built environment on climate change, this is very important work indeed.

NBI, which was founded in 1997, will enter its 20th year in 2017. The organization moved to Portland July 1, 2015, making this the first year we could participate in the survey. Prior to the move, NBI operated for over 18 years out of White Salmon and Vancouver, Wash. The move brought us to the vibrant heart of downtown Portland and lowered our carbon footprint by bringing us closer to where most NBI employees live and where there are more public transportation options. Over the past few years we have been working with our employees to update our business practices and systems and create a flexible and affirmative work environment that brings out the best in everyone.  Our longevity and accomplishments are a direct result of our talented and dedicated staff and I’m delighted that they feel NBI a great place to work.
